Description
Solo and Ensemble Contest gives our students two different ways to perform and be evaluated.  First, as a soloist, accompanied by a pianist, and second, as a member of a small ensemble of 3 to 5 players of the same instrument (usually).  All performances are in front of a judge who gives a rating for that performance.
Ratings are as follows:
1st division - Superior - earns a medal
2nd division - Excellent - earns a ribbon
3rd division - Good
4th division - Fair
5th division - Poor
This is a very different aspect of developing as a musician and a performer because of the required level of performance based on each individual.  Chamber music (solos and ensembles) is an important part of musical development.  Private Lesson Teachers or Band Directors will help students choose the music to perform.  The music must be chosen from a list published by UIL.  Soloists will sign up for a time to rehearse with the piano accompanist (arranged by the directors) twice before the contest.

Description
There are two parts to this event.  First is the Concert portion.  We select 2 pieces of music to perform from a list of prescribed music published by UIL.  We also select a March, which is not from a list.  The band prepares these 3 pieces for several months before performing them at the UIL Concert Contest for 3 judges who give the band a rating based on that performance.  Second is the Sight-Reading portion.  The band is given a piece of music written just for this statewide contest and has 7 or 8 minutes (depending on which band) to go over it with the director.  After the explanation time, the band must perform that piece for a rating as well.
Ratings are as follows:
1st division - Superior
2nd division - Excellent
3rd division - Good
4th division - Fair
5th division - Poor
This is a very difficult contest, and the standards are very high.  If a band earns 1st division ratings in both portions of the contest, they earn a Sweepstakes Trophy, which is the highest honor for the Middle School Band.
