DESCRIPTION
All Beginning Band students will attempt to adequately perform 12 major scales and the chromatic scale and pass them off during a 13-week period starting the first day of the 2nd semester.
PURPOSE
Scales are the foundation for developing good technique and learning notes for each instrument. We want our students to begin the process of becoming excellent players at this level. We also use this project to guide students to which performing band they will be in the following year.
PROJECT REQUIREMENTS AND DIRECTIONS
Use the Watkins Middle School Band Complete Method Book for your music.
Students will have an opportunity to play as many scales as they have prepared in class every Tuesday, as well as a few other days as time allows.
Students may choose the order that they attempt to pass off the scales.

GRADING
The project is not for a grade. It is only used to determine which performing band each student will be allowed to audition for at the end of the year.
Scales will be passed off if all of the following elements are performed correctly.
The student produces a good sound on all notes
All notes are correct
All rhythms are correct
All articulations are correct (tongue up and slur down)
The notes are played with the metronome
EXPECTATIONS
We expect that students will take time and do quality work on this project. They will need to make a plan for how they are going to pass off the number of scales they need to get into the band they want to be in.
REQUIREMENTS
All students will perform a final exam in May. The exam will also be used as an audition for those students who are continuing with band next year. The following chart shows what students must accomplish to be allowed to audition for the higher two bands. Students are not automatically placed in the bands based on this project.
