Technical Development Project

DESCRIPTION
All Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Concert 1 and Concert 2 students are required to turn in a tape recording of technical studies each six weeks. Requirements will increase for each project. We will provide each student with a blank tape at the beginning of the year.
PURPOSE
Scales and related exercises are the foundation for developing good technique and learning notes for each instrument. We want our students to continually improve their fundamental skills in order to prepare for performance music in middle school and high school.
PROJECT REQUIREMENTS AND DIRECTIONS
 Use the Watkins Middle School Band Complete Method Book for your music. The exact pages you should use and required exercises and tempos are on the Required Exercises and Metronome Settings Chart.There must be an audible metronome on the recording.Students may use the recorders and metronomes in the practice rooms in the band hall if they do not have either of those materials at home.Students may stop between exercises and they may also re-record them. Do not try to splice an exercise in half and record parts. You must play the entire exercise at one time (for example, the scale and the arpeggio must be played without stopping the recorder).DUE DATES
GRADING
The scale tape project is counted as 10% of the six weeks grade.
20 points - turning the tape in on time
120 points - the 12 exercises, 10 points each
40 points - the chromatic scale
20 points - returning the grade sheet signed by a parent
200 points - TOTAL POSSIBLE SCORE
EXPECTATIONS
We expect that students will take time and do quality work on this project. Students who turn in work below their abilities will be graded accordingly. Since there is plenty of time given to complete the project, and students are allowed to re-record the exercises, we expect that there will be no mistakes.
MINIMUM SCORE REQUIREMENTS
If a student in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble or the Concert 1 Band scores below the Minimum Score Requirement two six weeks out of the year, they will be moved down to a lower band. If a student does not turn in a project, they will be moved to the Concert 2 Band immediately.
